欧亚大陆广布的小型鸟类，体长约16-19厘米，以持续摆动的长尾为主要识别特征。栖息于开阔田野、河岸边及城市环境。冬季仍以昆虫为食，常在停车场、街道等铺装路面觅食。在伦敦、都柏林等城市冬季形成大规模栖息群落。

体长16.5-19厘米，东亚亚种可达21厘米，体重约25克。体型纤细修长，拥有该属标志性的长尾。整体羽色为黑白相间，但不同亚种存在差异：有些亚种背部为黑色，有些则为灰色。嘴细长，脚黑色。野外最显著的特征是那条几乎不停摆动的长尾。

最明显的辨识特征是持续的尾羽摆动动作。整体羽色为黑白对比鲜明，具白色眉纹和翼斑。与其他黑白相间的鹡鸰相比，其尾羽更长且摆动更频繁。在印度和东南亚的越冬地，多个亚种混群，辨识难度较大，需要仔细观察背部颜色和翼纹特征。

繁殖于欧亚大陆北纬75度以内的广大地区，在摩洛哥山区和阿拉斯加西部也有分布。在西欧和地中海地区为留鸟，其他地区则迁徙。北欧种群迁往地中海和非洲热带越冬，亚洲种群则前往中东、印度和东南亚。北美种群同样在亚洲热带地区越冬。栖息于开阔环境，包括水域附近、城市和农田。

以昆虫为主食，包括甲虫、蜻蜓、苍蝇、蜘蛛、蠕虫等，也会捕食小型鱼苗。繁殖期为4-8月，一夫一妻制，领域意识强。雌雄共同筑巢，巢呈杯状，筑于石墙、桥梁等缝隙中，有时利用河岸土洞或废弃建筑。每窝产3-8枚卵，孵化期约12天，双亲育雏。叫声为尖锐的'chissick'音，鸣唱较简单。

种群数量估计为1.3-2.3亿只，分布范围超过1000万平方公里。IUCN评估为'无危'级别，种群趋势稳定，未接近下降阈值。欧洲种群保持稳定。该物种适应性强，成功利用了人工建筑筑巢和城市环境觅食。主要威胁包括被捕捉用于收藏和笼养贸易，以及气候变化可能影响迁徙时间。
