雀形目燕雀科小型鸣禽。分布于北美和欧亚大陆的针叶林地区。喙端交叉是其最显著特征，可高效撬开针叶树球果取食种子。雄鸟羽色为红色或橙色，雌鸟为绿色或黄色，存在广泛的喙型变异和鸣叫类型分化，部分类群已被提升为独立物种或亚种。
形态特征
体长20厘米，体重40-53克，翼展27-29厘米。体型敦实，喙短粗而弯曲，喙尖交叉。雄鸟通体红色或橙色，雌鸟橄榄绿色至黄色。翅羽暗褐色，无翅斑。
如何辨识
野外最显著辨识特征为交叉的喙尖，可排除绝大多数鸟类。与近似种两色交嘴雀分布重叠，后者的明显特征为具有两条白色翅带。与鹦鹉交嘴雀、苏格兰交嘴雀、卡西亚交嘴雀在外观上极难区分，翅羽均无明显斑纹，通常需靠鸣叫声识别。
分布与栖息地
分布于北美和欧亚大陆的各类针叶森林。栖息和活动与针叶树种子产量密切相关。在种子歉收年份会进行广泛的爆发性扩散，某些地区如 Newfoundland 种群则为留鸟。
习性与生态
以针叶树种子为主要食物。繁殖期通常在6-9月，此时多数针叶树种球果成熟；但若发现食物充足的区域，可能全年繁殖。具高度游荡性和爆发性，球果歉收时会大规模扩散。繁殖期外常与其他类群或其他交嘴雀物种混群。
生存状况
IUCN评估为无危。种群数量稳定，但因依赖针叶林种子，其分布和数量受森林状况影响。局部种群面临栖息地丧失威胁。

英国自13世纪起有爆发性迁徙的文献记载。1254年由编年史学家马修·帕里斯首次记录；1593年再次出现时被描述为"未知鸟类"。雕刻家托马斯·贝威克记载了1821年数百只个体抵达的事件。历史记载描述其用交叉的喙取食苹果果肉。
