白背啄木鸟（学名：Dendrocopos leucotos）为啄木鸟科中型鸟类，体长24-26厘米，是西古北界体型最大的斑啄木鸟。分布于欧洲和亚洲中东部，栖息于大面积成熟落叶林，特别是栎林和山毛榉林。常见于树干垂直攀爬，繁殖季节雄鸟发出响亮的击木声。主要以昆虫及其幼虫为食，冬季兼食植物性食物。营巢于树洞中，每窝产卵5-8枚。目前种群整体稳定，但部分地区因栖息地丧失而稀有。
形态特征
白背啄木鸟是西古北界最大的斑啄木鸟种类，体长24至26厘米，翼展38至40厘米。整体羽色与大山雀相似，但具有独特的识别特征：翅膀上具有明显的白色横纹而非斑点，下背部为醒目的白色。雄鸟拥有鲜红色的顶冠，而雌鸟的顶冠则为黑色，两者形成鲜明的性别差异。
如何辨识
野外辨识时，最显著的特征是翅膀上的白色横纹和白色的下背部，这与大山雀翅膀上的白色斑点形成对比。此外，雌雄鸟的顶冠颜色差异也是重要辨识点。雄鸟的红色顶冠和雌鸟的黑色顶冠一目了然。飞行时可观察到此物种的体型明显大于其他斑啄木鸟。
分布与栖息地
该物种分布范围广阔，从欧洲中北部向东延伸至东北亚、朝鲜半岛和日本。指名亚种分布于欧洲中部和北部，而 lilfordi 亚种则分布于巴尔干半岛和土耳其。其余十个亚种分布于从乌拉尔山脉至东亚的广大地区。栖息于大面积成熟落叶林环境中，对枯立木和倒木的依赖性很强。在北欧国家较为稀有。
习性与生态
繁殖期在腐烂的树干上挖掘巢穴，洞口直径约7厘米，深度可达30厘米。每窝产3至5枚白色卵，孵化期10至11天。主要以木蠹虫及其幼虫为食，也会捕食其他昆虫，并取食坚果、种子和浆果。雄鸟的击木声非常响亮，用于领域宣示和求偶。常见的叫声包括轻柔的'kiuk'声和较长的'kweek'声。
生存状况
在北欧国家，白背啄木鸟的种群数量持续下降，引发了生态保护关注。瑞典政府已将该物种纳入国家生物多样性行动计划加以保护。由于其对成熟落叶林的严格依赖，森林砍伐和栖息地丧失是主要威胁因素。这种鸟类的存在通常被视为森林生态系统健康的指标。
