Introduction

A species in the family Cettiidae, first described by Robert Swinhoe in 1863. It breeds in Northeast Asia and Japan in temperate forest habitats.

Description

A small bird with a short tail. Males, females, and juveniles are similar in color, appearing brown all over with paler underparts and a darker brown crest and eyeline.

Distribution & Habitat

Breeds in portions of northeastern Asia and Japan. Non-breeding areas include Hainan, Taiwan, southeastern China, and Indochina. Prefers undergrowth in evergreen broadleaf or lowland coniferous forest.

Behavior & Ecology

Breeding males produce a high-pitched shee-shee-shee-shee or cee-cee-cee. Both males and females make a call similar to chott-chott-chott.
