Asian Stubtail

Urosphena squameiceps

鳞头树莺

IUCN: Least Concern Found in China

Description

A tiny, compact bird with an remarkably short tail that gives it a somewhat chunky silhouette. The plumage is uniformly brown overall with noticeably paler underparts. Both sexes share identical coloring, and juveniles retain this same appearance after fledging. The most distinctive marking is a darker brown crest on the crown, complemented by a contrasting eyeline of equally dark brown coloring.

Distribution & Habitat

Breeding populations occupy suitable habitat across Northeast Asia and Japan. During the non-breeding season, these birds migrate to Hainan, Taiwan, southeastern China, and Indochina. They demonstrate a strong preference for dense undergrowth within evergreen broadleaf forests and lowland coniferous forest environments.

Behavior & Ecology

Vocalizations form an important aspect of this species' behavior. Breeding males deliver a distinctive high-pitched territorial song, either as a rapid series of 'shee-shee-shee-shee' notes or as the 'cee-cee-cee' variant. Both males and females produce a characteristic 'chott-chott-chott' call, used for contact and alarm purposes within their dense habitat.
