Introduction
A species of bird in the family Columbidae, belonging to the genus Treron. It ranges across the eastern Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, from the Eastern Himalayas to Borneo and Sumatra, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Tibet and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical mangrove forests. The species is characterized by its specialized diet of fig syconia and distinctive slow-walking foraging behavior along branches.
Description
A rather small green pigeon, measuring under 26 cm (10 inches) in length. It has a thick pale greenish bill with a red base and a broad bluish-green eye ring. The grey crown and maroon mantle are diagnostic field marks. The wings display black primary and secondaries with yellow outer edges. Both sexes have green underparts. The thighs are dark green with whitish scales. Females show greenish undertail coverts with whitish scales, while males have a maroon dorsum and dull chestnut undertail coverts.
Distribution & Habitat
Distributed across the eastern Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, ranging from the Eastern Himalayas through Myanmar, Thailand, and the Malay Peninsula to Borneo, Sumatra, and the Philippines. Inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical mangrove forests throughout its range.
Behavior & Ecology
Feeds on syconia of figs, characteristically walking slowly along branches while foraging. This specialized feeding behavior distinguishes it from other green pigeons.
