Introduction

Taxonomically placed in the family Paradoxornithidae, having been reclassified from previous placements in Timaliidae or Sylviidae based on molecular genetic studies. Inhabits China and Myanmar. Two subspecies are recognized: S. b. brunnea in central and east Myanmar to northern and northwest Yunnan, and S. b. styani in the Dali area of central west Yunnan. The eye-ringed parrotbill (Suthora ricketti) was formerly considered a subspecies but is now treated separately.

Distribution & Habitat

Found in China and Myanmar. The nominate subspecies S. b. brunnea occurs in central and eastern Myanmar, extending into northern and northwestern Yunnan province in southwest China. The subspecies S. b. styani is restricted to the Dali area in central western Yunnan, southwest China.
