Burmese Collared Dove
Streptopelia xanthocycla · 缅甸斑鸠
Introduction
A dove species in the family Columbidae, formerly classified as a subspecies of the Eurasian collared dove. Endemic to the Irrawaddy River basin in central Myanmar, with unconfirmed reports from adjacent China. Distinguished by a bright yellow eye ring and slightly darker plumage compared to the Eurasian collared dove.
Description
A medium-sized dove measuring 30–32 cm in length. Plumage is slightly darker overall than the similar Eurasian collared dove. The most distinctive feature is the bright yellow eye ring, which contrasts with the pale grey to whitish eye ring of its close relative.
Identification
Best distinguished from the Eurasian collared dove by the bright yellow eye ring (pale grey to whitish in the similar species) and slightly darker overall plumage. The song is a diagnostic two-note coo, unlike the three-note coo of the Eurasian collared dove.
Distribution & Habitat
Endemic to the Irrawaddy River basin in central Myanmar. Unconfirmed reports exist from adjacent regions of China, though no firm evidence supports its presence there.
Behavior & Ecology
The vocalization is a distinctive two-note coo, differing from the three-note song of the Eurasian collared dove. Other behavioral characteristics are presumed similar to related collared dove species.
