along larger rivers of western and central Amazonia from eastern Ecuador (Napo River) and eastern Peru (Río Napo, Río Ucayali, and Amazon River) eastward to central Brazil (to the lower Río Tapajós); also a population (possibly an undescribed taxon) in Río Orinoco drainages in far eastern Colombia (Vichada) and southwestern Venezuela (western Amazonas)
