Introduction
A bird species in the genus Pteruthius, found in montane forests of the eastern Himalayas and Southeast Asia from northern Burma to southern Cambodia. It is part of a cryptic species complex, with males and females exhibiting different plumages and several populations treated as subspecies.
Description
Sexually dimorphic with many population variations that may be difficult to diagnose in the field. Generally similar in appearance to the Himalayan shrike-babbler. In all subspecies except validirostris, male tertials are partly coloured rufous and partly fulvous.
Distribution & Habitat
Found in montane forests from the eastern Himalayas and northern Burma to southern Cambodia. Subspecies ranges include: ripleyi in the western Himalayas east to central Nepal; validirostris (including nocrecus and glauconotus) from eastern Nepal to western Burma; aeralatus in Burma and western Thailand; ricketti from northeastern Burma to southeast China and parts of Indochina; schauenseei in southern Thailand; cameranoi in the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra; robinsoni in Borneo; and annamensis in southern Vietnam.
