Introduction

A passerine bird in the family Leiothrichidae, formerly placed in the genus Garrulax and moved to Pterorhinus following a 2018 molecular phylogenetic study. It inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland and montane forests.

Distribution & Habitat

Found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, and Vietnam. Introduced to Hawaii. Natural habitats include subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest and subtropical or tropical moist montane forest.

Behavior & Ecology

Tends to be dominant in mixed-species foraging flocks. Its appearance is mimicked by the Lesser necklaced laughingthrush, a trait possibly selected for despite the lack of close relation.
