Introduction

Species of passerine bird in the family Leiothrichidae. Found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam, with introduced populations in Hawaii. Inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. Formerly placed in genus Garrulax but moved to genus Pterorhinus following molecular phylogenetic study in 2018. In mixed-species foraging flocks, individuals tend to be dominant.

Distribution & Habitat

Range extends across South and Southeast Asia including Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam. Introduced to Hawaii. Inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest and subtropical or tropical moist montane forest.

Behavior & Ecology

Tends to be dominant in mixed-species foraging flocks. The Lesser necklaced laughingthrush mimics this species despite not being especially closely related, which may have been selected for as a result of this species' dominance in foraging flocks.
