breeds Round Island (southwestern Indian Ocean), southwestern Pacific from Lord Howe and Phillip Island of the Norfolk group (east of Australia), islets off New Caledonia, islets off North Island (New Zealand), and Chatham Islands (east of New Zealand) eastward through Austral Islands; ranges to waters off southeastern Australia and Pacific Ocean southeast of Japan eastward to northwestern Mexico and southward to Peru
