summer breeder in burrows on Bugio (Desertas Islands, just southeast of Madeira, central Macaronesia); non-breeding range probably mostly to Azores (northwestern Macaronesia) and southeastern Brazil, more rarely to Gulf Stream off eastern North America and western Europe
