Introduction
Member of the Asian barbet family native to Southeast Asia. Inhabits foremost forests between 900 and 2,700 m (3,000 and 8,900 ft) altitude. Listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List due to wide distribution and stable population.
Description
Vivid green above with paler yellowish-green plumage below, deep blue wings, and verditer underneath the tail. Bill is dusky black, with black around the eyes. Forehead is crimson and throat orange. Legs are greenish. Length is 20.5–23.5 cm (8.1–9.3 in) and weight is 50–101 g (1.8–3.6 oz).
Distribution & Habitat
Resident in Nepal, India, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam, and mainland China; presence in Bangladesh is uncertain. Inhabits tropical and subtropical moist forests at elevations of 900 to 2,700 m (3,000 to 8,900 ft). Two subspecies: P. f. franklinii occurs in Himalayan foothills from central Nepal to northern Myanmar, Laos, and southwestern China; P. f. ramsayi occurs from central and eastern Myanmar to the Malay Peninsula.
Behavior & Ecology
The male's territorial call is a very loud pukwowk.
