Description
Medium-sized, green woodpecker with streaked throat and scaly whitish underparts. Upperparts green with yellowish rump. Shows white supercilia and distinctive white and black moustache stripe. Crown red in male, blackish in female. Tail dark and plain. Bill small and dark.
Identification
Distinguished from streak-breasted woodpecker by darker eyes, less dense underpart streaking, and thicker moustache stripe. Differs from laced woodpecker by more pronounced underpart streaking and absence of warm yellowish hue on neck. Separated from scaly-bellied woodpecker by having streaked breast and throat rather than unstreaked breast and throat with streaked belly.
Distribution & Habitat
Found throughout the Indian subcontinent. Inhabits drier woodland habitats ranging from lowland areas to the foothills of mountains.
