Introduction

Asian songbird species in the tit and chickadee family (Paridae), formerly placed in the genus Parus. Native to the western Himalayas with a large range across parts of Bhutan, China, Pakistan, India, Myanmar, and Nepal. Inhabits boreal and temperate forests. Not considered a threatened species by the IUCN.

Distribution & Habitat

Native to the western Himalayas, occurring in parts of Bhutan, China, Pakistan, India, Myanmar, and Nepal. Natural habitats are boreal and temperate forests. Four subspecies are recognized: P. r. rubidiventris (southern rim of Himalayas from NW to NE India and N Nepal); P. r. beavani (southern rim of Himalayas in NE India and Bhutan); P. r. whistleri (southeastern rim of Himalayas in SW China, adjacent N Myanmar, and extreme NE India); and P. r. saramatii (very localised in NW Myanmar). In Bhutan, P. r. beavani is a common all-year resident in moist Bhutan fir (Abies densa) forests between approximately 3,000 and 4,000 meters ASL.
