Introduction

A songbird species in the tit and chickadee family (Paridae) native to the western Himalayas. Some subspecies were formerly assigned to the rufous-naped tit (P. rufonuchalis), or these two were considered entirely conspecific. The species was formerly placed in the genus Parus. Its natural habitats are boreal and temperate forests. In Bhutan, P. r. beavani is a rather common year-round resident in moist Bhutan fir forests between approximately 3,000 and 4,000 meters above sea level.

Distribution & Habitat

Native to the western Himalayas with a very large range occurring in parts of Bhutan, China, Pakistan, India, Myanmar, and Nepal. Inhabits boreal and temperate forests. In Bhutan, this bird occurs year-round in moist Bhutan fir forests at elevations between 3,000 and 4,000 meters ASL.

Conservation

Widespread throughout its range and by no means rare. The species is not considered threatened by the IUCN.
