Introduction
A small passerine in the genus Muscicapa of the family Muscicapidae, breeding in the eastern Palearctic. It is a slender, long-winged bird that forages by sallying from open perches to catch insects.
Description
Length 13 to 15 cm. Slender and long-winged. Mainly grey-brown above and white below, with heavy grey streaking on the breast and flanks. Features a narrow white wing bar, a pale patch between the bill and eye, black bill and feet, large eye, and a white eye-ring. Adults of both sexes are alike. Juveniles differ by having white spots and dark scaling on the upperparts.
Distribution & Habitat
Breeds in coniferous forests of north-east China, North Korea, and south-east Siberia (including Sakhalin and Kamchatka). Migrates through eastern and southern China, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Winters in forests, forest edges, and open country with scattered trees in Borneo, the Philippines, Palau, eastern Indonesia, and New Guinea. Vagrant to Singapore, Vietnam, Alaska, and Australia.
Behavior & Ecology
Perches in the open to wait for passing insects. Flies out up to 20 metres to catch prey before returning to the perch to eat.
