Introduction

A small passerine species endemic to central China, inhabiting thick brush and tea plantations in mountainous regions. It is distinguished from its closest relative by specific vocalizations and plumage characteristics.

Description

Relatively small bird with a weight of 10 grams and an average length of 13 cm. Distinguished from the russet bush warbler by plumage differences.

Distribution & Habitat

Found in five mountainous provinces of central China. Prefers elevations below 7,500 feet in thick brush and on tea plantations.

Behavior & Ecology

Emits a long buzz followed by a shorter click, often repeated in series. The song is in a lower frequency than that of the russet bush warbler.

Culture

The scientific name honors Cheng Tso-hsin (Zheng Zuoxin), founder of the Peking Natural History Museum and a prominent Chinese ornithologist.
