Introduction
A small passerine bird currently classified in the Old World flycatcher family, Muscicapidae, having been formerly placed in the thrush family. It is a migratory insectivore breeding in the eastern Palearctic and wintering in southern and south-eastern Asia. The species breeds in coniferous forests with dense understory and is characterized by skulking behavior while feeding on the ground.
Distribution & Habitat
Breeds in the eastern Palearctic from Siberia and northern Mongolia, northeastern China, Korea, and across to Japan. Winters in southern and south-eastern Asia and Indonesia. Breeding habitat consists of coniferous forest with dense understory, often beside rivers or at woodland edges. In winter, it stays in dense vegetation. It is a very rare vagrant to Europe and as far east as Pakistan.
