southwestern Australia (North West Cape to about Eyre); winters to northward

breeds southeastern Australia (northeastern Queensland to Eyre Peninsula and including Tasmania); some southern birds winter north to central Australia and Cape York Peninsula, Torres Strait, Lord Howe and Norfolk islands (east of Australia); colonized Norfolk Island and New Zealand including the Chatham Islands in the mid-20th century
