  northern and eastern Madagascar (southward in the west to Mahajanga, and in the east to near Farafanga)

• Coua cristata dumonti

  west-central Madagascar (Mahajanga to southward to Morondava), broadly intergrading with pyropyga between the Tsiribihina and Mangoky rivers)

• Coua cristata maxima

  status uncertain; known from a single specimen from southeastern Madagascar (Tolagnaro)

• Coua cristata pyropyga

  southwestern and southern Madagascar (from the Mangoky River and Morondava eastward to just west of Tolagnaro in the western slopes of the Anosyenne Mountains and southeast along the coast)
