Introduction

A species of finch in the family Fringillidae, formerly placed in the genus Uragus but moved to Carpodacus based on phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences.

Distribution & Habitat

Found in Japan, Kazakhstan, North Korea, South Korea, and Russia. Natural habitats include temperate forests, subtropical or tropical moist shrubland, and temperate grassland. It is a very rare vagrant to Europe, with many records considered to relate to escapes from the cage bird trade.
