Formerly classified in the genus Uragus, genetic studies reclassified it in Carpodacus, aligning it with other rosefinches.
Distribution & Habitat
This species occupies a broad geographic range across East Asia and parts of Central Asia, being found in Japan, both North and South Korea, Kazakhstan, and Russia. It inhabits temperate forest edges, subtropical and tropical moist shrubland, and temperate grassland environments. While primarily resident throughout its normal range, individuals occasionally wander westward, resulting in very rare vagrant appearances in Europe.
