Introduction

Medium to large bird of prey native to East Asia, parts of Russia, and South Asia, with some populations wintering in Southeast Asia. Sometimes considered a subspecies of the common buzzard, though treated as a distinct species by some scientists since 2008. Carnivorous.

Distribution & Habitat

Breeds in Siberia, Mongolia, northern China, North Korea, and Japan. Winters in Southeast Asia, southern Japan, southeastern China, and Taiwan. Resident populations exist in the Izu Islands, Bonin Islands, and Daito Islands. Four subspecies are recognized: B. j. burmanicus, B. j. japonicus, B. j. toyoshimai, and B. j. oshiroi.
