Privacy Policy

Last updated: February 2026

BirdMemo is a birding record and species database tool for birdwatchers. We value your privacy. This policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your data.

1. Data We Collect

1.1 Observation Records (Optional Sharing)

When you choose to "Share observation data" upon completing a birding session, the following information is uploaded to our servers:

  • Bird species observed and their counts
  • Observation time (start and end time)
  • Associated hotspot name and location
  • Companion count and whether the checklist is complete

This option is enabled by default. You can uncheck it each time you end a session, or disable it in settings.

1.2 Data We Do Not Collect

  • GPS Tracks: Your birding route tracks are stored locally on your device only and are never uploaded to our servers
  • Personal Identity: We do not require account registration and do not collect names, email addresses, or phone numbers
  • Notes: Any notes you write in your birding records are not uploaded

1.3 Device Identifier

We use a randomly generated device identifier (UUID) to distinguish data uploaded from different devices. This identifier cannot be linked to your personal identity.

2. How We Use Your Data

Your shared observation data is used for:

  • Community Statistics: Combined with other data sources (such as GBIF) to display common species and observation frequency at birding hotspots in the "Hotspot Explore" feature
  • Scientific Research: We upload aggregated observation data to GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) and other scientific databases to support bird research and biodiversity conservation
  • Product Improvement: Optimizing homepage carousel recommendations, hotspot ranking, and other features

3. Data License

By choosing to share your observation data, you agree to publish it under the CC BY 4.0 (Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License). This means:

  • Anyone may freely use, share, and adapt the data
  • Attribution to the BirdMemo community is required when using the data
  • This is consistent with the licensing used by major scientific databases like GBIF

4. Data Storage and Security

  • Your local birding records are stored on your device and are under your full control
  • Uploaded data is stored on our servers with reasonable security measures
  • We do not sell your data to third parties

5. Your Rights

  • Opt out of sharing: You can disable the sharing option at any time. Future observation records will be saved locally only
  • Previously shared data: Since shared data is published under CC BY 4.0 and may have been incorporated into platforms like GBIF, previously published data cannot be retracted
