这是一种体高约44厘米的小型涉禽。分布于旧热带地区，从西非到日本，南至澳大利亚。栖息于红树林、河流及溪流沿岸植被中，常静立于水边等候猎物。2023年通过分子系统发育研究，从原先的纹鹭复合种中独立为新物种，该研究将二十个亚种划分为独立物种。
形态特征
体长35-48厘米，体重130-250克，翼展52-60厘米。雌雄羽色相同。成鸟背部及翅膀呈蓝灰色，腹部白色，头顶黑色，从喙部延伸至眼部下方有一条深色细纹，腿短而黄色。幼鸟整体偏棕色，下部具条纹状斑纹。值得注意的是，分布于澳大利亚的两个亚种存在两种色型变异：灰色型和红褐色型。
如何辨识
野外辨识的关键特征包括蓝灰色的背部和翅膀、白色的腹部、黑色的头顶以及从喙延伸至眼下的深色眼线。与近似种纹鹭的区别主要基于分布区域：纹鹭现为单型种，仅限于南美洲；而本种分布于旧热带地区，包括非洲、亚洲至澳大利亚的广大区域。
分布与栖息地
分布于旧热带地区，从撒哈拉以南非洲向东延伸至日本，向南至澳大利亚。栖息环境多样，既适应淡水环境，也见于咸水环境，最典型的是红树林湿地，同时也栖息于河流、溪流沿岸的植被中。共有二十个亚种，分布范围覆盖非洲、亚洲、大洋洲及太平洋岛屿。
习性与生态
主要在水面边缘静候猎物突袭，属于守株待兔式的捕食策略。食物以小型鱼类为主，辅以青蛙和水生昆虫。营巢于灌木丛或树枝间隐蔽处，巢穴较为隐秘。每窝产卵2-5枚，孵化期19-25天。雏鸟被灰白色绒毛覆盖，羽色较浅，约5周龄可离巢飞翔。
生存状况
该物种分布范围极广，在其分布区域内较为常见，种群数量稳定。由于适应能力强且栖息地类型多样，目前未发现重大的生存威胁。
