大型太阳鸟，分布于东南亚，从缅甸向东延伸至努沙群岛，向北抵达菲律宾西部。栖息于半开放栖息地，常见于果园、公园和林地边缘。体型健硕，行动敏捷，常在花丛间吸蜜。雄鸟具虹彩绿色头部、紫色上背和栗色翅斑，下体黄色；雌鸟全身橄榄绿色和黄色为主。

这是一种体型较大且体重相对较重的太阳鸟，喙部粗壮而弯曲。体长约14厘米，体重在7.4至13.5克之间，雄鸟体型略大于雌鸟。雄鸟上体具有虹彩光泽，主要为绿色和紫色，翅覆羽和肩羽呈栗色，下体主要为黄色。雌鸟上体为橄榄绿色，下体为黄色，整体羽色较为朴素。

野外辨识时，可通过其较大的体型和粗厚的喙部与其他太阳鸟区分开来。雄鸟的虹彩绿色头部和紫色上背是显著特征，翅上的栗色斑块也是重要辨识点。雌鸟则可通过橄榄绿色的上体和黄色的下体进行识别。该物种与灰喉太阳鸟在分布上互补，但后者在羽色和测量数据上存在稳定差异，两者之间无杂交证据。

分布于东南亚地区，栖息于各类半开放环境，包括林地边缘、果园、公园和灌丛地带。分布范围从缅甸向东延伸至苏门答腊及其卫星岛屿、婆罗洲大部分地区、爪哇岛和巴厘岛，向南抵达努沙群岛和菲律宾西部。

主要取食花蜜，是重要的传粉者。也会取食小型果实和浆果以补充营养。幼鸟由亲鸟喂养昆虫以获取蛋白质。繁殖期会在树冠层或灌木丛中编织悬挂式的巢穴。鸣声通常为轻柔的啁啾声，在取食和领域防卫时会频繁发出。

该物种分布范围广阔，种群数量稳定，目前种群趋势未被评估为下降。在IUCN红色名录中被列为无危物种。其适应能力较强，能够在人类活动改变的栖息地中生存。
