Introduction

A species in the family Rallidae, found across South and Southeast Asia including Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, and Vietnam. Inhabits subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. An omnivorous rail with a notably broad diet.

Description

Slate-gray overall with a chestnut brown back. Eyes are red. Legs are slender and pinkish-red.

Distribution & Habitat

Found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, and Vietnam. Natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.

Behavior & Ecology

Omnivorous, consuming a wide range of foods including invertebrates, insects (particularly parasites off large animals), fish, frogs, seeds of aquatic plants, bird eggs, worms, mollusks, grass, and berries.
