Introduction

A migratory thrush in the family Turdidae. It breeds in the mountains of northeast China and winters in subtropical or tropical moist montane forest in India and Indochina. Recent records extend its known range to Daman and Makwanpur in Nepal, with vagrant occurrences in northeastern Bangladesh. The species is threatened by habitat loss and habitat fragmentation.

Description

A medium-sized thrush with warm-brown plumage. The head shows a white supercilium and a white crescent below the eye. The male has rufescent-olive upperparts including the crown and ear-coverts, with grey underparts that become paler toward the belly and vent. The female has a white throat and whiter center to the breast and belly, with dark spots or streaks on the sides of the throat and upper breast, and warm brownish fringes to the breast feathers.

Distribution & Habitat

Breeds in the mountainous regions of northeast China. Migrates to spend the non-breeding season in subtropical and tropical moist montane forests of India and Indochina. Recent records indicate its presence in Daman and Makwanpur, Nepal, with vagrant observations in northeastern Bangladesh.

Behavior & Ecology

Forages for insects and berries on the ground, and less commonly in trees. Often found in the company of the eyebrowed thrush (Turdus obscurus). May also feed on nectar from the flowers of the shingle tree (Acrocarpus fraxinifolius).

Conservation

Threatened by habitat loss and habitat fragmentation, which continue to impact its breeding and wintering grounds.
