A starling species (family Sturnidae) endemic to the Himalayan region and surrounding areas. It breeds in northern India and western Nepal, then migrates to winter in Northeast India, northeastern Bangladesh, and Myanmar. Inhabits subtropical and tropical moist lowland and montane forests. Feeds on insects, fruit, and nectar from flowering trees including Erythrina, Bombax, and Grevillea. First successfully bred in captivity in the United Kingdom in 1969.

Behavior & Ecology

Diet consists primarily of insects and fruit, supplemented by nectar from Erythrina, Bombax, and Grevillea trees. The species has been successfully bred in captivity, with the first recorded breeding in the UK occurring in 1969 by Mrs K.M. Scamell. Details of this breeding were documented in the January/February 1970 edition of Foreign Birds, the journal of the Foreign Bird League.
