Introduction

Species of bird in the family Columbidae. Found in lowland forests of the Philippines and Taiwan up to 1,000 meters above sea level. Diet consists mainly of fruits. Assessed as least-concern by IUCN, but population is declining due to deforestation from slash and burn farming, mining, illegal logging, and habitat conversion, as well as illegal wildlife trade and hunting.

Description

Medium-sized dove up to 27 cm long. Male has green belly and wings, brown tail, whitish grey head and neck with purple base, red iris, and small black patch under yellow bill. Female has green head, neck and breast.

Distribution & Habitat

Occurs in tropical moist lowland primary and secondary forest in the Philippines and Taiwan. Inhabits areas up to 1,000 meters above sea level, though typically found below 700 meters. Fairly common throughout the Philippines but very rare in Taiwan, known only from four specimens.

Behavior & Ecology

Diet consists mainly of fruits. The female lays a single white egg in a nest made of twigs. Song is described as a deep, throaty 'rrrooooooo' that does not carry far.

Conservation

IUCN Red List assesses this species as least-concern. Population is believed to be declining due to ongoing deforestation throughout the Philippines caused by slash and burn farming, mining, illegal logging, and habitat conversion. Additional threats include illegal wildlife trade and hunting for meat.
