Introduction

A species of true finch (Fringillidae) native to South and Southeast Asia. Found across Bhutan, China, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Inhabits temperate forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. Distinguished by its compact size, grayish head, nape, and breast plumage, and specialized diet of nuts and native conifers. Observed in pairs or small groups in parts of its range. The species remains poorly studied with limited documented information about its biology.

Description

A relatively small finch measuring 16.5 cm (6.5 in) in length. The head, nape, and breast display grayish coloration. The overall form is compact and finch-like with a conical bill adapted for seed consumption. The wings and tail are darker than the underparts. Grayish upperparts contrast with the paler underparts. The species possesses the typical robust, conical bill characteristic of the true finches.

Distribution & Habitat

Occurs across Bhutan, China, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Inhabits temperate forest environments as well as subtropical and tropical moist montane forests. Found at forest edges and within wooded areas throughout its range. No specific migration patterns are documented in available sources.
