Blue-crowned Laughingthrush

Pterorhinus courtoisi

蓝冠噪鹛

IUCN: Critically Endangered China: Level I (Highest) Found in China

Introduction

This species belongs to the family Leiothrichidae. Formerly placed in the genus Garrulax, it was moved to Pterorhinus following a molecular phylogenetic study published in 2018. The specific epithet honors Frédéric Courtois (1860-1928), a French missionary to China. Endemic to Jiangxi, China, this critically endangered bird was only rediscovered in 2000 in Wuyuan County after being considered lost to science. The total wild population numbers approximately 200 individuals. A second subspecies known from specimens collected in Simao, Yunnan in 1956 has not been encountered in the wild since that date and is now treated as a synonym of the nominate form.

Description

This laughingthrush has a distinctive bluish crown, which distinguishes it from similar species. The nominate subspecies has slate-blue coloration on the head, contrasting with the yellowish throat and underparts typical of the genus. Further plumage details would be needed for complete description.

Identification

Most readily distinguished from the yellow-throated laughingthrush by crown coloration: this species has a bluish crown while the yellow-throated laughingthrush has a pale grey crown. This character was historically overlooked when the two were considered conspecific subspecies.

Distribution & Habitat

Currently known only from Wuyuan County in Jiangxi province, southeastern China. The population is highly localized and dependent on remaining forest fragments in this limited range. The former subspecies from Simao in Yunnan has not been observed since 1956.

Behavior & Ecology

No detailed behavioral information provided in available sources.

Conservation

Classified as Critically Endangered. The species was erroneously listed as Least Concern in the 2006 IUCN Red List; this error was corrected to Critically Endangered in the 2007 update. The wild population numbers approximately 200 individuals. More than 100 birds are maintained in zoos and private aviculture as part of a captive breeding program, though the subspecies identity of captive birds is uncertain.
