Introduction

A small parrot species (18 cm) belonging to the genus Psittinus. Found in southern Myanmar, peninsular Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra, and nearby islands. Inhabits lowland forests below 700 m elevation, including open woodland, orchards, plantations, mangroves, dense scrub, and coconut groves. Exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism and occurs in flocks of up to 20 birds. Diet consists of seeds, fruit, and blossoms.

Description

A small parrot measuring 18 cm in length with predominantly green plumage. Distinguished by bright red underwing coverts, a reddish shoulder patch, and yellowish margins on the wing coverts. The species shows marked sexual dimorphism: males have a black mantle, blue head and rump, and red upper mandible, while females display a grey-brown head.

Distribution & Habitat

Range extends through southern Myanmar, peninsular Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra, and adjacent islands. Two subspecies are recognized: P. c. cyanurus occurs in the Malay peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo, while P. c. pontius inhabits the Mentawai Islands southwards from Siberut and is larger than the nominate subspecies. Inhabits lowland forest habitats up to 700 meters elevation.
