Introduction

Passerine bird in the family Prunellidae. Endemic to the Himalayas, occurring in Afghanistan, Bhutan, Tibet, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan. Inhabits temperate forests. Descends to lower-to-middle altitudes during winter migration. Two subspecies recognized: P. s. jerdoni in east Afghanistan and west Himalayas, and P. s. strophiata in central and east Himalayas to central China and north Myanmar.

Distribution & Habitat

Range extends through the Himalayan region from Afghanistan east through Bhutan, Tibet, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan. Inhabits temperate forest habitats. Undertakes seasonal vertical migration, moving to lower-to-middle altitudes during winter months. The western subspecies (P. s. jerdoni) is found in east Afghanistan and west Himalayas, while the nominate subspecies (P. s. strophiata) occurs from central and east Himalayas to central China and northern Myanmar.
