Himalayan Prinia

Prinia crinigera

喜山山鹪莺

IUCN: Not Evaluated Found in China

Introduction

A species of bird in the family Cisticolidae. Found across the Indian subcontinent and parts of China, with range generally following the Himalayas. Occurs in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bhutan, Nepal, and Yunnan Province in China. Exhibits significant sexual dimorphism and seasonal plumage variation. Formerly considered conspecific with the striped prinia (P. striata) as the striated prinia, but split as a separate species based on a 2019 study. The two species are sympatric in Yunnan Province.

Description

Features a long, broad tail with cold-toned dark coloring. Shows marked sexual dimorphism in both size and plumage. Seasonal variation in appearance is pronounced. Non-breeding plumage: both sexes display streaking on upperparts and mottling on face and breast sides. Breeding plumage: males have blackish crown (often with paler edges), blackish face, dark mottled breast sides, and streaked mantle; bill is blackish. Females are lighter overall with reduced streaking; bill is pale pinkish with darker coloring toward the tip.

Identification

Previously treated as conspecific with the striped prinia (P. striata), but now recognized as a separate species. Sympatric with P. striata in Yunnan Province. Four recognized subspecies: P. c. striatula (Afghanistan and west Pakistan, the palest subspecies), P. c. crinigera (north Pakistan to Arunachal Pradesh), P. c. yunnanensis (northwestern Yunnan), and P. c. bangsi (southeastern Yunnan). P. c. bangsi was formerly classified under Deignan's prinia.

Distribution & Habitat

Range follows the Himalayan region across Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bhutan, Nepal, and Yunnan Province in China. Populations in Myanmar, most of China, and Taiwan are now assigned to P. striata. The four subspecies have distinct geographic ranges within this overall distribution, with P. c. yunnanensis and P. c. bangsi being restricted to different parts of Yunnan Province.
