Pale-legged Leaf Warbler
Phylloscopus tenellipes
淡脚柳莺
Description
A small warbler measuring 12 cm in length. The upperparts are brownish, while the crown and nape are greyish-brown, creating a contrasting appearance. The most prominent feature is the whitish supercilium, which does not reach the forehead but extends well beyond the eyes. A dark brown eyeline is visible, becoming wider behind the eye. The cheeks are mottled pale brown and the throat appears whitish. The undertail coverts are white, creating strong contrast with the paler olive-brown rump and uppertail coverts. Unlike many leaf warblers, this species notably lacks any greenish tinge in its plumage. The breast and belly are whitish, washed with pale brown.
Identification
The combination of brownish upperparts and greyish-brown crown and nape helps distinguish this species from similar leaf warblers. The prominent whitish supercilium that extends behind the eyes is a key field mark, as is the absence of greenish tones in the plumage. The white undertail coverts contrast noticeably with the olive-brown rump and uppertail coverts.
Distribution & Habitat
Breeds in Manchuria, where it inhabits temperate forests. This species is migratory, spending the winter months in Southeast Asia.
