Ryukyu Minivet

Pericrocotus tegimae

琉球山椒鸟

IUCN: Least Concern Found in China

Introduction

This small passerine is endemic to southern Japan. Formerly classified as a subspecies of the ashy minivet, it was recently recognized as a distinct species. The species has the characteristic minivet form: a slim body, agile flight, and a pointed bill for insect catching. Males have grey and black plumage with orange or red markings. The Ryukyu minivet has expanded its range since the 1970s, spreading from the Ryukyu Islands to southern Kyushu, with records now extending into Shikoku and western Honshu. This expansion may be linked to declines in the ashy minivet. The species inhabits the canopy of evergreen and deciduous forests, where it forages for insects in the upper branches.

Description

Identification

This species requires careful identification due to its extreme similarity to the ashy minivet, from which it was only recently split. The two species were formerly classified as conspecific, meaning distinguishing them in the field demands attention to subtle differences in plumage coloration, call notes, and range. Observers should note that the Ryukyu minivet occupies a different geographic range than the ashy minivet and may show slight plumage tone variations. Given the recent taxonomic revision, historical records may require re-evaluation to confirm species identification.

Distribution & Habitat

Originally restricted to the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan, this species has expanded its range significantly since the 1970s, colonizing southern Kyushu and by 2010 occurring throughout that island plus Shikoku and western Honshu. A notable 2024 record from Jeju Island, South Korea represents a significant range extension beyond Japan. The species inhabits evergreen and mixed deciduous forests from sea level to 1,700 meters elevation but will also utilize human-modified landscapes including cedar plantations and gardens.
