Introduction

Paradoxornis unicolor is a species of parrotbill in the family Paradoxornithidae. This small passerine bird is endemic to the central and eastern Himalayas, where it inhabits montane forest habitats. It is characterized by its distinctive small, yellowish, parrot-like bill and grey-brown plumage. The species moves in small groups and frequently joins mixed species foraging flocks. Its closest relative is the three-toed parrotbill.

Description

A small, slender bird measuring 17-19 cm (6.7-7.5 in) in length. The plumage is grey-brown overall with a notably long tail. The most distinctive feature is the small, yellowish bill with a parrot-like appearance. A dark stripe runs above the eyes and continues along the sides of the crown, providing a subtle facial pattern.

Distribution & Habitat

Found throughout the Himalayan region including Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, and Nepal. Inhabits montane forest habitats in the central and eastern portions of the Himalayan range.

Behavior & Ecology

Social birds that move in small groups throughout their habitat. They frequently associate with mixed species foraging flocks, a common behavior among many Himalayan forest birds.
