Ryukyu Robin

Larvivora komadori

琉球歌鸲

IUCN: Near Threatened Found in China

Introduction

Taxonomically, this species was previously placed in the genus Erithacus along with the Japanese robin and European robin. A 2006 molecular phylogenetic study revealed that it and the Japanese robin were more closely related to the Siberian blue robin (then in Luscinia) than to the European robin. A 2010 study confirmed these findings and found Luscinia to be non-monophyletic, leading to the resurrection of the genus Larvivora to accommodate this clade. The species is endemic to the Ryūkyū Islands of Japan. The Okinawa robin was previously considered conspecific but is now treated as a separate species.
