Rufous-chinned Laughingthrush

Ianthocincla rufogularis

棕颏噪鹛

IUCN: Least Concern Found in China

Introduction

A bird species in the family Leiothrichidae. It ranges across the northern parts of the Indian subcontinent and into parts of Southeast Asia, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand, Tibet, and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. Six subspecies are recognized.

Description

A mid-sized laughingthrush characterized by a black cap and a band on the brown tail. The underparts are greyish, while the upperparts display scale-like feather patterning. A distinctive pale buff loreal patch and a broad dark moustachial stripe bordering the rufous chin and ear coverts are key identifying features. Considerable geographic variation exists: western populations are greyer and paler with more contrasting dark patterns; eastern populations have a paler throat with less marked throat markings; populations in Meghalaya show an orange wash on the underside from throat to belly.

Identification

Best identified by the combination of black cap, band on brown tail, greyish underparts, and scale-like patterning on upperparts. The pale buff loreal patch and broad dark moustachial stripe bordering the rufous chin and ear coverts are diagnostic. Geographic variation affects plumage brightness and throat markings, with western populations showing greater contrast and eastern populations appearing paler overall.

Distribution & Habitat

Found across the Himalayas and adjacent regions including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India (including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Sikkim), Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand, Tibet, and Vietnam. Inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.
