Introduction

Species of starling (family Sturnidae) endemic to southern Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos. Previously classified as a subspecies of the pied myna, which has since been split into three distinct species. Characterized by black and white plumage with a distinctive black collar.

Description

A medium-sized starling with striking black and white plumage. The upperparts are predominantly black, while the underparts are white. A prominent black collar separates the white face and neck from the darker upperparts. The bare facial skin around the eye is red-orange in color.

Identification

Differs from the Indian pied myna (G. contra) in having more extensive white streaking on the forehead and a wider area of bare red-orange facial skin surrounding the eye. Compared to the Javan pied myna (G. jalla), it shows more white streaking on the forehead but considerably less extent of bare red-orange facial skin around the eye.

Distribution & Habitat

Restricted range extending from southern Myanmar through Thailand to Laos in mainland Southeast Asia.
