Introduction

Species of bird in the family Leiothrichidae. Found in Yunnan, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand. Inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.

Description

Approximately 32 cm (13 in) in length. Head features include a chestnut crown, brownish-black face and throat, and a diffuse white collar. Overall plumage is pale brownish-grey. Dark iris with grey bill and legs. Known for its distinctive laughing call.

Identification

Very similar to the grey laughingthrush (Garrulax maesi), but distinguished by its darker head. The diffuse white collar separating the dark face and throat from the body plumage is a key distinguishing feature.

Distribution & Habitat

Native to tropical southeastern Asia. Range includes central and northern Thailand, eastern Myanmar, western Laos and Yunnan province in southwestern China. Altitudinal range is between 500 and 1,800 m (1,600 and 5,900 ft). Occurs in lowland and montane broad-leaved forest and scrubland.

Conservation

Has a very wide range and is described as fairly common, though rare in China. Population trend is probably declining due to habitat destruction, but the total population remains large and the decline is not sufficiently rapid to trigger concern.
