Oriental Hobby

Falco severus

猛隼

IUCN: Least Concern China: Level II Found in China

Introduction

A small falcon species (Falco severus) measuring 27-30 cm in length. It belongs to the Falco subgenus Falco, the hobbies, and is considered monotypic with no recognized subspecies. The species has a patchy distribution across the Indo-Gangetic Plain in the northern Indian subcontinent, extending east through the eastern Himalayas to southern China and the Philippines, and south through Indochina to New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. It is notably absent from Borneo, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula despite occurring both north and south of these regions. Vagrant records exist from Malaysia and southern India.

Description

A small falcon with a body length of 27-30 cm. Adults display rich orange-red underparts, bluish-grey upperparts, a black hood, and pale throat. Juveniles feature black streaks on a rufous chest and a mottled back. The species shows no sexual dimorphism. Like other hobbies, it has bright yellow legs, eye ring, and cere.

Identification

Distinguished from the Eurasian hobby by its wholly orange-red underparts rather than coloration restricted to the legs and lower belly. Differs from the similar Australian hobby in having more extensive black on the head, with the black malar stripe merging into the black nape, lacking the white 'hook' behind the cheeks. Shares the bright yellow legs, eye ring, and cere characteristic of other hobby falcons.

Distribution & Habitat

Patchily distributed across the Indo-Gangetic Plain in the northern Indian subcontinent, eastern Himalayas, southern China, and the Philippines, extending south through Indochina to New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Absent from Borneo, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula. Has occurred as a vagrant in Malaysia and southern India. Inhabits lowland forested areas and woodland.

Behavior & Ecology

Feeds primarily on insects and birds, with rare observations of bat capture. Nests in abandoned nests of other birds, utilizing locations in trees, on building ledges, or on cliffs. Breeding season occurs from May to August.
