Sillem's Rosefinch
Carpodacus sillemi
褐头朱雀
Introduction
Known from two specimens collected in 1929 in the Aksai Chin region of southern Xinjiang, China. Photographed in 2012 approximately 1,500 kilometers from the original collection location, confirming its persistence in high mountain regions of western China. Originally classified in the genus Leucosticte; genetic studies indicate close relationship to the Tibetan rosefinch, resulting in current placement in Carpodacus.
Distribution & Habitat
This species is endemic to western China, specifically the Xinjiang Autonomous Region. The two type specimens were collected in the Aksai Chin area, a high-altitude region in southern Xinjiang. The 2012 photographic record came from a location approximately 1,500 kilometers from the original collection site, suggesting the species may have a wider but highly localized distribution across the high mountain habitats of the region. No information is available regarding migration patterns.
Culture
The species is named in honor of Jérôme Alexander Sillem (1902-1986), a Dutch bird collector who participated in the 1929 expedition that collected the original specimens in the Aksai Chin region of Xinjiang, China.
