Streaked Shearwater

Calonectris leucomelas

白额鹱

IUCN: Near Threatened Found in China

Description

A medium-sized seabird measuring approximately 48 cm (19 in) in length with a wingspan of 122 cm (48 in). The article provides no specific details on plumage coloration or distinguishing physical features.

Distribution & Habitat

This species inhabits the Pacific Ocean, nesting primarily on offshore islands of Japan and the Korean Peninsula. It is pelagic but also occurs in inshore waters. After breeding, individuals migrate south to feed in the seas off northern New Guinea, the Arafura Sea, and the South China Sea. Vagrants have been recorded well off the west coast of the United States, from the southern coast of India, from New Zealand, and there is a specimen record from Wyoming.

Behavior & Ecology

Feeds mainly on fish and squid. Often follows fishing boats, particularly those with anchovy crawls off Japan. Nests in burrows in forested hills. The article notes that some mortality occurs when individuals ingest bait on long-line fishing lines or become entangled in nets.

Conservation

Described as abundant and widespread throughout its range. However, the species faces mortality from fishing by-catch, predation by introduced cats and rats on nesting grounds, and harvest by some traditional human cultures.
